Item photos: shooting a decent menu with just a phone

You do not need a studio. Side window light, one background, a fixed angle — and you get consistent shots for every item.

Top-down, plate centred, garnish at 10 o'clock. Same position for every dish so the menu grid feels calm.

The shot

  • Side window light, two hours after sunrise or two hours before sunset.
  • A flat surface covered with one sheet of matte paper — white or beige.
  • A tripod (or a stack of books) so every shot is the same height.
